The interim period with an external interim leader can assist an organization objectively assess its current state and future hopes. With the correct interim leader, the organization can be given breathing time to reflect on where they have been and where they want to go.
Not all organizations have the luxury of hiring an external interim director who has the experience to maintain stability in the organization. In these cases, it is imperative that board leadership take a greater role in managing the organization through the transition and appoint an internal leader who can maintain status quo until a new leader is hired.
Be cautious of how and to whom you transfer key stakeholder relationships during the transition. Many funding sources are skeptical of organizations in transition so be sure there is relationship continuity for the stakeholder through other staff or board members.
Executive leadership transitions are inevitable. Though it can be a very stressful time for an organization, the transition can provide opportunities for internal exploration and growth providing you properly prepare for the transition. Organizations can mitigate the negative impact of transitions by developing a succession plan, creating a transition strategy, appointing interim leadership and hiring the right candidate.
